18/10/02 – To paraphrase Vangel, ‘We were all caged animals, but 100% in love with the chains’ last night at the Comfort Zone.

With performances from DJ Danimal, Ill Seer, Vangel&Dorc, Bending Mouth (Thesis and Self-Help), Hip-Hop Wieners (Pip Skid and John Smith), McEnroe, and DJ Honey Cut…well, you had to be there.

I could leave it at that, but this is for the people who ignored the warning signs dropped by these artists in the past week, month, and even year. Anytime you see these names that have originated from Toronto, Winnipeg and Moose Jaw, you have to know that Canadian hip-hop is growing and maturing into something much more advanced than the human ear. Why weren’t you there?

The night started with DJ Danimal on the wheels spinning the freshness an average mainstreamer would find educating.

He was followed by Ill Seer, a fresh writer/rhymer/younameit. Seer flowed quickly, harshly, calmly, softly, rhythmatically…my praises to him, along with everyone else that cheered him on.

DJ Moves produced most of his beats, with others provided by Dorc.

Next, the crowd was blessed with nostril waste by Vangel&Dorc (buy the album, you’ll know what I’m talking about).

Performing tracks his followers have heard, and some newer/mastered verses, the attendants could not help but stand in place, break their necks and listen in awe as he spit sick ish.

As for Dorc, his production methods are not of ‘a typical glove’. No one could wear the hand-wear that he posses which allow him to blow your mind with beats not fit for the average hip-hop fan.

Have you ever heard of Bending Mouth, before reading this question?

First, you have a short guy with a leprechaun-type beard (Thesis), and then you have a tall lanky guy with pantyhose (though he swears it was a black men's sock) on his mic-hand (Self-Help).

Thesis prepares for the set by tying a garbage bag filled with something around his neck, then dawns some weird-ass mask. Thesis urged the crowd to move closer to the stage by tossing candy just in front of him. The two spit a couple of verses, and then cut the music.

“Babies, is someone giving birth,” yells Self-Help, as he rips into the garbage bag throwing washable tattoos and candy to the crowd. Crazy!

These guys flowed faster than a woman in…well, you get the idea. They were dirty, nasty, inspirational, educational lyrics that left one’s head spinning.

DJ Honey Cut and Gumshoe Strut hit the stage next for a couple tracks. Strut hit the heads in the place with a remix of the Roots ‘Adrenaline’.

McEnroe, Pip Skid and John Smith ended the night off with a bang. And usually, the nights start that way.

Dubbed the Hip-Hop Wieners, they came out with the deadly force of a can of beans, and the lovely after-taste of a braut (I’m not gay). In Pip Skid-ian fashion, three beers on the table behind him, the mic was rocked.

This article could on and on about the superior talent that was showcased at the Comfort Zone last night, but I’d only end up repeating myself. Thoughts are running through my head a mile a minute about what I, and many others, witnessed last night.

Let me repeat paragraph two…

With performances from DJ Danimal, Ill Seer, Vangel&Dorc, Bending Mouth (Thesis and Self-Help), Hip-Hop Wieners (Pip Skid and John Smith), McEnroe, and DJ Honey Cut…well, you had to be there.

And that’s that.

The next time you hear of these artists/producers, go to the shows, buy their product, educate yourselves in the future of Canadian hip-hop.
